traceform
A methodology for translating photographs into objects.
Through pressure, assembly and time..
TRACEFORM begins with photography but does not end there.
Images are subjected to processes of translation, fragmentation, assembly and reconstruction. Rather than functioning as fixed documents, photographs become raw material for physical investigation.
Through printing, plotting, embossing, pinning, stitching, layering and other forms of intervention, the image is continually transformed. Each action leaves evidence of decisions, pressures and relationships accumulated over time.
The resulting works exist somewhere between photograph, object, drawing, record and artifact.
TRACEFORM is not a style or a series of artworks. It is an evolving methodology for exploring how images change when they are treated as material rather than representation.
RECORD
Image as evidence.
The photograph functions as a record of observation, place and experience.
MARK UP
Image plus interpretation.
Information is added, removed, traced, measured, plotted and reconsidered.
ASSEMBLY
Image as object.
Fragments are joined, layered, pinned, stitched and reconstructed into physical forms that carry the memory of their making.
